DC is officially changing the original Captain Marvel's name to Shazam. Kinda depressed me at first, until I remembered that DC doesn't deserve the character in the first place. They sued him out of existence before buying him outright (or owning him via the lawsuit?). Then Marvel performed the cock-block to end all cock-blocks, by trademarking Captain Marvel and attaching that trademark to an alien military officer of their own creation.

I used to read old reprints of the Captain's Fawcett adventures and maybe some newer stories drawn in that style back in the seventies. There was also a TV version that had a Hispanic looking Billy Batson travelling around the country in a ~~mobile meth lab~~ RV with ~~his former science teacher~~ some old dude solving problems like Caine in Kung Fu. Due to the trademark issue, both the comics and the TV shows were called Shazam instead of Captain Marvel.

Once I found out why that was, I kinda held it against Marvel, though I'm a fan of their Captain Marvel primarily because of Jim Starlin's run on the character (which I didn't get around to til the late 70s/early '80s). Now I think it might be better if Marvel actually owned the original Captain Marvel themselves. Actually no. Probably not, but it would make their recent acquisition of Marvelman just a little more complete.

Speaking of Alan Moore (kinda), he once suggested (I think) that the wizard Shazam, the old man who gave Batson the original captain's abilities was a future version of Batson/Marvel in his golden/silver age homage, Supreme. And that, actually based on something he read by C.C. Beck. The latter bit I may be mis-remembering.

I still think a Shazam/Captain Marvel film should cast The Rock as the lead.

I don't think it helps that this guy's high profile supporters would likely oppose his execution even if he was guilty. I'm pro death penalty myself but I'd like to see stronger punishments against those who knowingly commit misconduct that results in improper convictions that lead in an innocent man's life being taken. After Mr. Davis is gone, the investigation into the alleged misconduct that lead to his conviction (and death, if that occurs tonight) should continue. And the people responsible should be punished to the full extent of the law (and perhaps those laws need looking at). But... I suspect this will remain a Pro vs Anti issue, with neither side willing to budge. With his innocence reduced to a side issue once he's gone (the main purpose being to stop executions) the focus will move on to the next inmate in line for the chopping block. Personally, the likely hood of innocent people being sentenced to death (and it's pretty likely) doesn't deter me from being pro-death. Some people simply need to be taken out and removed from society and life in jail isn't enough for those dudes. If a few other people have to go in order to make that happen, fine. But, generally speaking, I'm not cool with the cops taking some random guy and literally pushing him under the bus to appease the public's (and victims family's) outrage at some horrific crime.

Skipped the first one (might check it out if it's ever on Netflix), but once I heard Neveldine and Taylor were doing the sequel, it was pretty much a given I was seeing this. That is, assuming they didn't get kicked off the project by ~~Governor Rick Perry~~ Josh Brolin like they did on Jonah Hex (which I also skipped but might check out if it's ever on Netflix).
I thought I read Cage wasn't coming back, but I'm glad he did. He's perfect for the type of crazy those directors are gonna bring.

Red Tails, Captain America and Super

George Lucas had been talking up this movie for over a decade and now it's almost here. Glad he didn't direct it himself, though.

I thoroughly enjoyed Captain America. Turned out all my worries were unfounded. Nazis were kinda underplayed, but it worked well enough that I had no complaints while I watched the film.

It's interesting to me how much fun the Marvel produced movies are contrasted with DC's offerings. I haven't seen Green Lantern, yet, so I'm mainly judging based on the Nolan Batman films and Superman Returns. Returns wasn't dark exactly, but it wasn't a whole lot of fun, either, even though I liked it more than most folks. DC used to be the more lighthearted and fun of the two companies (with a few major exceptions) in print. Until the 80's.

The shared universe is another thing that actually excites me about the Marvel films, even though I've grown to hate how it's become abused in the comics via all the events, tie-ins, crossovers, crisis-es, etc., not to mention the huge volume of abnormal characters that reside in each. Captain America manages to integrate elements of both Thor and Iron Man, while he himself (or at least the Super Soldier program) was referenced in the previous Incredible Hulk film. And of course, there are the Sam Jackson bits at the end. I almost never stay for those (I always forget), though I stayed this time (and so did most of the audience). These bits, except for the one at the end of Thor, tend to play better on Youtube. Mostly because of how long those credits roll. At a budget of about $140 million, I find it hard to believe all those people are making union wages.

July 30th - The post credit sequence for Cap didn't work that well,* not because I was tired from sitting through the credits, but because it's not a add on bit of conversation like in the other movies, but a bunch of rapid fire shots taken mostly from what seems to be insignificant bits of next year's Avengers. I would have rather seen Rogers in the truck with Fury and maybe Stark on the way to S.H.I.E.L.D. or something. Then again, if I recall correctly, the post credits for Iron Man 2 was just a minor seen that was used directly in Thor, and Thor's post credits might very well be a scene from The Avengers** (I don't remember much of it, but that was another one I stayed for).

* "didn't work so well" as in I didn't care for it, myself. But as to it's purpose of promoting next year's film, it works just fine.
** I wonder if we'll get a director's cut of that Avengers film (based on the UK sci-spy show) that Uma Thurman was in like 12 years ago. I chose not to see the version that was released. I wouldn't be too surprised to see a new release of that movie. While one has nothing to do with the other, that's never gotten in the way of opportunistic rights holders before.

Super is a hard film for me to describe to people cuz it sounds like Kick Ass, but it isn't. I mean, superficially, it kinda is, but it ain't. I mean it was funny, and unsettling-ly violent, but more so on both counts than I remember Kick Ass being. I thought it was also very touching and life affirming in almost the exact same way (thematically, that is) Sucker Punch tried and failed to be.

Other pluses for me:
Rainn Wilson pretty much sounding like Dwight from The Office (saw him on a talk show a while back and was kinda disappointed that he's not always that guy).
A sorta superhero movie related cast; Liv Tyler (from one of the Hulk movies), Kevin Bacon (a recent X-Men villian) and Ellen Page (a former X-Man). Oh, yeah: Nathan Fillion (Dr. Horrible's nemesis).
The convergence of Christianity and Anime tentacle porn.

One minus:
Can't say I cared for the soundtrack, but it didn't detract from the movie overall.

Transformers 3 - How come no one ever blames Steven Spielberg for how crappy these movies are? If he can fire what's her name for calling Michael Bay Hitler, then surely he could'a told somebody to tone down the sitcom bullshit I had to sit through while waiting for robots to blow shit up.

Stormfront Goes Underground...

in the wake of the Oslo terror attacks. It seems the guy the authorities have in custody is a Stormfront member and the white supremacist site has closed off access to outsiders, apparently due to embarrassment. The post I linked to suggests it was down completely, perhaps so that they may delete any damning content.

I occasionally browse the site, usually after watching movies like Inglorious Basterds or The Eagle, or reading news stories like the recent bit about Rudolf Hess getting the Osama Bin Laden treatment, you know, just to see how offended (or if offended) they were.

I temper my voyeuristic tendencies, heeding Nietzche's warning about staring into the abyss too long. My visits are short and I'm not curious enough to do any thing like setting up an undercover account. I wonder if others have?

Infinite Kung Fu is a comicbook I followed for a short while a few years ago, but I stopped hitting the comic shops on the regular (at the time regular was once every couple of months or so) and forgot about it. When I found out a compilation was coming I was excited, but that was at least a couple of years ago and after checking for it a few times online I forgot about it again. Now it looks like it's really coming and I'm exited again. And the things over 400 pages, which is a bit more than I expected having read only about 5 or 6 issues of the periodical (never saw #1). Top Shelf has a 250 page preview for anyone interested. Kagan McLeod's work speaks for itself, so give it a look. Coming in August.

Creepy Presents Bernie Wrightson.
It's a collection of Wrightson's work for the Warren magazines (Creepy and Eerie) from the seventies. I'd recently downloaded a crapload of cbrs of the two titles. Mostly for the Wrightson stories as well as for a John Severin illustrated story called "Creep" (or something similar) that's always stayed with me. I hadn't gotten around to sorting them out when I came across an article about the upcoming ~~paperback~~ hardcover. I'll edit the cbrs eventually for convenience (reading on my Nook Color), but that book belongs on my book shelf and so it's been pre-ordered.
I recall an effort in the 80's to colorize those stories (either Pacific or Eclipse comics) which didn't look good. Just wasn't meant to be.

Of course, part of the reason I think Sam Jackson Nick Fury works (in the initial run of Mark Millar's Ultimates and the movies) is because they've taken away all of the glitzy nonsense including the tight blue suit and simply gave us a badass. Which is what regular Fury was when he was introduced to S.H.I.E.L.D. in Strange Tales #135. I'd like to see that guy again.

The other part is that it's Sam Jackson. There are all sorts of comicbook characters who could be modeled on Samuel L. Jackson; J Jonah Jameson from Spiderman, Perry White from Superman, Steve Trevor from Wonder Woman... The possibilities are endless.
